Diaconate
What is the Diaconate? Biblical Description: Members of the Diaconate are to be individuals worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as members of the Diaconate. Diaconate members are also to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything, as well as full of spirit and wisdom. (1 Timothy 3:8-13, Acts 6:2-3)
Deacons / Deaconesses at URC: The Diaconate is charged with being responsible for serving those in distress and need; they shall oversee and carry out their work as those concerned with the redemption of humankind. (RCA Book of Church Order, Art 6: Sec 2) Within URC particularly the Diaconate board is given the responsibility of overseeing the mission committee and the collection of offerings. The Diaconate board maintains and disburses funds from the Diaconate Account to meet the fiscal and material needs of those in the congregation. The board organizes a yearly Christmas offering to missions organizations, both locally and abroad. The board acts as a liaison between the congregation and Lansing Christian Services or other community outreach organizations in the greater Lansing area.
