How do I become a member at URC?
Joining University Reformed Church is a three step process.
Step One: Attend the new members class. The class meets for eight Sundays, and is offered several times throughout the year. The class reviews basic Biblical teachings on the character and attributes of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, the nature of revelation, sin and salvation, the sacraments, and spiritual gifts. The materials also cover some of the theological distinctives of the Reformed faith and church policy. Check the Sunday Classes page on our website or church bulletin for next available class. A separate children’s membership class is offered from time to time for young people who want to make profession of faith and join the church. Contact Dave Hinkley for information on the next youth class.
Step Two: Meet with the elders. The Elders are charged with oversight of church membership. They meet the second Tuesday of every month to receive new members, handle baptism requests, and pray. A few of the elders will meet with you to hear how you became a Christian, ask a few questions, and respond to any questions you may have. The meeting takes about 30 minutes. You can schedule a time to meet with the elders by contacting the church office.
Step Three: Be publicly received before the congregation. Several times throughout the year we have membership Sundays. All new members are asked introduce themselves and make membership vows before the congregation.
