Purpose / Mission
To create a site that serves Christ well through the means of URC.
The site has these three primary functions:
- To serve the current URC members in ways that help them in their walk and participation being part of the community of URC
- To attract people in the community who do not attend URC to visit, grow, and become involved in the church.
- To be a light to the greater church and world with any content that can be shared digitally from which they can benefit

Generally images should be compressed JPEGs unless the image needs to be transparent, in which case a PNG is best.
If an image "weighs" more than 300kb it is likely too big. That is almost a third of a megabyte and could take a while to load on slower connections.
App Image Sizes
The home slider images should be sized 1140px wide by 350px tall
- Every slide should be linked somewhere and it should be clear what happens when you click the slide e.g. 'Learn More" "Sign up Now" "Watch Sermon Series"
- There should be a max of 3-5 slides in the slider.
- 2 solid-state slides include morning and evening sermon series
- 2-3 rotating slides of current events or ministry highlights
- The 2-3 rotating slides rotate with a new slide being introduced every week and no slide being on for more than 2-3 weeks respectively.Also, if a slide is featured in the player, it should not be anchored to the latest news section. (i.e. 50th Anniversary Celebration). Once it rotates off of the slide schedule, it can then be anchored back onto the Latest News section with discretion. Although there are very few events that we will be highlighting for such a long period.
Page banners that appear at the top of the page should always be 800px wide. The height is flexible but 250px would be most consistent. Preferably keep it 200-300px tall.
Best to upload at 500px square.
The news posts' featured images should be a minimum of 300px square. Need to be square.
The site has caching that makes the pages load much more quickly for users. The cache should "flush" itself intelligently but if a change is not showing up on a device you can manually purge the cache:
Note: the DNS runs through CloudFlare which also caches the site, if there are major site changes this cache may be worth manually flushing as well. Contact one of the tech team members.
Posts & Pages
Make a Post "Sticky"
Sometimes you may want a post to stay in #1 position on the Home News grid and also at the top of the News page. This is easily done by making the post "Sticky"
You may have more than one sticky post if-needed. Recommended:only ever have 1-2 posts marked as sticky at a time. See all posts marked sticky here
Make a post / page full width
An image to stretch the full content on a page with a sidebar would be 800px wide
Service Time Changes
If the service times ever change (e.g. for summer) you need to change it at two places.
- Edit the Homepage
- The widget area for Visit
- On SubSplash, the URC location has a spot for times.
- On the Sundays page
Linking to Staff
When linking to staff it is preferred to link their name to their Staff page. e.g. Pat Quinn
You can link to their email address but the above is preferred.
Sidebars / Widget Areas
A widget area is typically like a sidebar but some of them are like the footer thirds area.
A widget can just be text/html or something like a dynamic list of new events.
If you enable the Alert / Emergency display on the top of the homepage, these are your icon choices:

The site has the FontAwesome icon set installed. This is a huge set of useful icons.
The scale up and down without losing quality and look great on any device.
There is an insert button in the WP editor to allow easy generation
The icons can be used within HTML by just using a tag like:
